Cable Internet Device Support
Is my Router compatible?
Your existing router may have worked perfectly fine with your previous internet service, but it may not be compatible with our internet service as some networks still use outdated connection methods compared to ours. To check if your router is compatible with us, check out our requirements below.
Internet Connection Port
Your router will need an Ethernet WAN/Internet Port to use our internet service.
On most routers, the Ethernet WAN/Internet Port is commonly in a different colour from the other ports, and they should be the same size and shape as the other network ports on the router. The port will be labelled WAN or Internet.
If you are using a modem router or a router that has BOTH a WAN/Internet Port and a DSL Port, it MAY be compatible with our network service. However, we can not guarantee its stability and do not recommend using it for our Cable Internet Service since it is primarily designed for ADSL/VDSL connections.
If you are using a modem that ONLY has a DSL port, unfortunately, it’s not compatible with our Cable Internet Service.
Internet Connection Type
We are using two different internet connection methods for our Cable Internet Service. Your router will need to support any of these to use our Cable Internet Service.
PPPoE: We recommend using this method to connect the internet service as it will not need to re-login again. This requires a CityCable Username and Password for your connection to function.
DHCP/Dynamic IP/Automatic IP: If your router does not support the PPPoE connection method, you still can connect to our internet service by using this method. A login page will pop up when you connect to our service and a CityCable Username and Password will be needed for your connection to function. However, you will need to re-login every month to make stable the internet connection.
*For the customer who lives in Author Townhomes (325 Stations Street), you will only able to connect to the internet service via the Dynamic IP/DHCP connection method. You will not need to log in and the connection will be stable for a long time.
Brand
If you have an ISP-branded router(like Optus, Telstra, Belong, etc), unfortunately, it is not 100% compatible with our Cable Internet Service and we do not recommend you use them for our Cable Internet Service.
How to Configure My Router
1. Connecting to the Router
First, make sure that your router is powered on and connected to your computer using an Ethernet cable.
Open a web browser on your computer (e.g., Google Chrome, Firefox, or Edge).
In the address bar, type the router’s IP address which commonly can be found on the back of the router. This is commonly one of the following:
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.100.1
Press Enter.
2. Login to the Router Control Panel
A login page will appear asking for a username and password. By default, this information is typically printed on a sticker on the back of the router or provided in the router’s manual. Common default credentials include:
Username: admin
Password: admin or password
If you’ve changed the password previously, use your custom login credentials.
Click on Login or press Enter to access the router’s control panel.
3. Navigating to the WAN (Internet) Settings
Once logged in, find the Internet or WAN settings menu. This is usually located under sections labeled:
Internet Setup
WAN
Basic Setup
Click on the appropriate section to access the WAN/Internet settings page.
4. Selecting the Network Connection Method
You will typically see options to configure the router’s internet connection method. Here you will choose between:
– PPPoE with a username and password.
– Dynamic IP/DHCP/Automatic IP
For PPPoE Configuration:
Select PPPoE from the dropdown or radio button options for the connection type.
Two new fields will appear: Username and Password.
Enter the username and password provided by us City Cable in these fields.
Leave any Service Name field blank.
Set MTU to the default (typically 1492) unless otherwise instructed.
Ensure Always On is selected to keep the connection active.
For Dynamic IP /DHCP/Automatic IP Configuration:
Select Dynamic IP, DHCP or Automatic IP from the list of connection types.
There will typically be no additional fields to configure in this mode.
Save your settings.
5. Saving the Configuration
Once you’ve entered the necessary information, scroll down and click on Save or Apply to commit the changes.
The router may restart to apply the new settings.
6. Test the Internet Connection
Once the router has restarted, it should automatically attempt to connect to the internet using the selected configuration (PPPoE or Dynamic IP).
To confirm the connection, go to the router’s Status or System Info page, which will display whether the connection is active.
Open a new browser tab and try loading a webpage to confirm that the internet connection is working.
